Clone Stamp Tool Tutorial November 28, 2009

There are many tools you can use to edit photos in photoshop. One such tool is the Clone Stamp Tool. I will tell and show you how to use this tool in photoshop. The Clone Stamp tool is on the left hand side tool bar (circled). Below are step by step instructions on using this tool. You can use this tool to do many different things. The first thing I used this tool for was to erase some people in a picture.

1) Download the picture you wish to edit.

2) Click on the clone stamp tool. There will be a round brush. To change the size you can right click. A menu like the one to the left will show up. Click the size you wish.
3) Find an object in the picture that you wish to erase. I want to erase the people in the right hand corner in this picture.
4) Hold the ALT key down and left click on the area you wish to use to cover the object up. To get rid of the people, I will hold ALT down on the spot of red rock right by the people.

5) Go to the object you wish to erase and change. Click and drag over the object you are erasing until it is gone. You might need to zoom in so that you can get closer or use a smaller brush. I took the red rock that I had picked up and started erasing the people.

6) Repeat until all the objects you want to change are changed. I continued to erase other people by picking up areas of red rock that would look good to cover up some of the other people. I did this until I was done.

The second thing I used this tool for was to cover up reflections from the flash of a camera.

1) Follow steps 1-3 from the previous example. Except in this picture I want to cover up the bright spots.

2) I do this by finding an area in the picture that would look good to cover up the bright spots. I decided to use the building to cover up the top reflection and some of the bush and wall to cover up the bottom to reflections. I hold ALT and left click on the building. I go to the top bright spot and start erasing. I then hold ALT on some of the bushes and wall. I go to the bottome bright spots and start erasing them.

3) When I’m done, the picture looks like this.

The last thing I did with the Clone Stamping tool is add grass to the picture. Obviously, there is already grass. But it is rather dead looking. So I decided I wanted green grass in it.

1) Follow steps 1-3 previously stated. Though this time I’m adding green grass to the picture.

2) I found one of my other pictures that had green grass in it. In this case I used the picture above, the one I covered the bright spots up in. As long as both pictures are opened in photoshop, you can do this. I held ALT down and left clicked on the grass in the above picture. I then went to the picture below, with the dead grass, clicked and started adding the grass.

3) I had to zoom in around the people so that I could outline the people and not cover them up with grass. When I was done it looked like this.

These are just what I did when using the clone stamping tool. I’m sure there are other things you can do with this tool when it comes to erasing, covering up, and changing aspects of pictures. Hope this helps you use the clone stamping tool.
